“Stuff” and Other Stuff

Abundant wildflowers thrive in the rich soil of the Smoky Mountains. In our younger days, one small specimen with a big name became a source of amusement between my sister and I.

Over a few years, it seemed we always ran into the same ranger. He would be at the amphitheater for a talk, our guide for a hike, or we would cross paths with him in the Cove somewhere. Ranger Weaver McCracken had a true love for the park that shined through in all his words and actions. Over time, we grew on him as much as he did us. Of all the things he taught us, only one proved difficult to remember. You would think we could recall a unique name like pipsissewa……
